Major principles of decentralized organizations according to Brafman & Beckstrom in “The Starfish and the Spider”

1st Principle: When attacked, a decentralized organization tends to become even more open and decentralized; the harder you fight it, the stronger it gets.

2nd Principle: it’s hard to tell a centralized organization with decentralized operations apart from a truly decentralized one.

3rd Principle: an open system doesn’t have centralized intelligence; the intelligence is spread throughout the system.

4th Principle: open systems can easily mutate.

5th Principle: the decentralized organization sneaks up on you.

6th Principle: as industries decentralize, overall profits decrease.

“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth — not going all the way, and not starting.”
— Buddha
